Попробовал подобрать память для нового семейства процессоров Intel. Оказывается не всё так просто. Частота шины процессора именила единицу измерения. С Мегагерц на Гигапереносы за секунду (GT/s – GigaTransfers rep second).

The Intel® Xeon® processor 5500 series includes an integrated memory controller supporting high-speed, three-channel DDR3 memory. DDR3 enables higher capacity, higher performance, and lower power than DDR2-based systems. This platform supports up to a maximum of 16GB per DIMM using 1Gb or 2Gb DRAM chips. Multiple DDR3 DIMM types are supported:1
- Registered DIMMs (RDIMM)
- ECC unbuffered DIMMs (UDIMM ECC)
- Unbuffered DIMMs (UDIMM)
A new Intel® memory configuration tool is available. The tool supports the Intel Xeon processor 5500 series only. The tool is able to assist users and system builders to 1) quickly analyze the memory population for the optimal performance, and 2) to select the optimized processor and DDR3 memory configuration for their specific usage model. Download tool.
Memory performance considerations
Memory performance is dependent on several factors:
- Processor SKU+
- Memory Type ( UDIMM or RDIMM )
- The type of Ranking ( Single Ranking(SR), Dual Ranking (DR) or Quad Ranking (QR)
- How the DIMMs are populated on the server board+For further details and information on DDR3 memory support and performance for the Intel Xeon processor 5500 series platforms, see additional documentation via the resources box on this page.
General memory population guidelines
Balanced DIMM population (same number and type of DIMMs in each channel) is generally recommended for the best overall memory performance.
Mixed DIMM speeds can be installed, however, all DIMMs will run at the speed of the slowest DIMM populated.
The below chart makes recommendations for memory and CPU selection based upon some usage models.
Usage | Workloads | Memory Frequency | Max B/W | Recommended # of DIMMs per Channel | Max DIMMs2 | Max Capacity3 | CPU |
Maximum bandwidth | HPC | 1333 MHz | 32 GB/s | 1 | 6 | 48GB | E5570 E5560 E5550 |
General purpose | Various apps | 1066 MHz | 25.5 GB/s | 2 | 12 | 96GB | E5570 E5540 E5560 E5530 E5550 E5520 |
Maximum capacity | Virtualized platforms | 800 MHz | 19.2 GB/s | 2 QRO RDIMM 16GB | 12 | 192GB | All |
3 SR/DR RDIMM 8GB | 18 | 144GB |
OSR=Single rank DR=Dual rank QR=Quad rank
Note: Intel® Server Board-specific memory support is available via the Intel® Server and Workstation Boards website.
DDR3 1066 MHz is the mainstream memory technology for Intel Xeon processor 5500 series, offering:
- Higher capacity than 1333 MHz at lower cost
- Higher bandwidth for about the same price as DDR3 800 MHz
Capacity and price:
- Up to 4GB DIMMs for mainstream deployments
- Limited availability and high premiums for 8GB and 16GB DIMMs
1Memory support is dependent on board design so you need to check with your supplier.
2For advanced RAS (mirroring), max DIMMs reduced to 4 DIMMs (DDR3 1333 MHz), 8 DIMMs (DDR3 1066 MHz), and 12 DIMMs (DDR3 800 MHz).
3Assumes 8GB single- or dual-ranked DIMMs, except when specified separately.
